PSAT 8/9 Test Information

The PSAT 8/9 test measures Reading, Writing and Language, and Math skills. This test is part of the SAT suite of assessment and is offered to 8th and 9th graders. Score is reported for Evidence-Based Reading and Writing and Math sections. The score ranges from 240 to 720 points for each section. The total score ranges from 480 to 1440.

Evidence-Based Reading and Writing

The evidence based reading and writing section is composed of two tests that assess different but related skills and knowledge. You will need to answer 42 questions in 55 minutes. The questions are grouped by passages. There are five passages and each one is about 500 to 700 words long. The following skills are assessed in the Reading section of the test.

  • Tone, Attitude, and Purpose

Writing

Writing and Language

In the Writing and Language test you will answer 40 questions in 30 minutes. You will work through four passages and they will assess your skills in the following areas.

  • Grammar
  • Vocabulary
  • Sentence Structure
  • Punctuation
  • Approach and Intention
  • Effective Sentences

Math

Math

Math section of the PSAT 8/9, evaluates your ability to solve problem. In the first section of the math test, you will not be allowed to use a calculator. You will answer 13 questions in 20 minutes. Some of the questions in the math section are constructed response questions i.e., you are required to compute the answer and enter the answer in the provided answer sheet. The following concepts are tested in the first math section - no calculator

In the second math section, you will be allowed to use your calculator. You will answer 25 questions in 40 minutes. The following math concepts will be tested in this test.
